Five cottages on the banks of the river Ant

The venue itself comprises five unique, self-catering cottages that line the banks of the River Ant, a key waterway of the Norfolk Broads. This prime location is the core of its appeal, offering immediate access to a huge body of water. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a complete novice, the ability to fish directly from your accommodation is a major draw. The properties also boast private moorings, allowing you to bring your own vessel or hire one locally to explore the extensive Broads network, from the vast expanse of Barton Broad to the bustling waters of Wroxham.

Riverside Fishing at The Granaries

The fishing at The Granaries is all about location, with the five cottages offering unique and highly convenient access to the water with direct access to the bank of the River Ant.  The river here is a quiet, natural watercourse, with very little boat traffic and a healthy stock of coarse fish, opening up directly on to the vast network of the broads.

Species and Notables

The river Ant holds a fantastic mix of coarse fish and can be a great start for junior or less experienced anglers. Bream and silver fish in 2-5lb bracket are fairly common place, as our roach up to 1lb. Rudd, and Perch are also in abundance and if you fancy a bit of predator action, then you’ll find pike quite common, some going into double figures.

Effective Techniques and Tackle

Given the proximity to the river, a simple and effective approach is often best. A waggler setup is perfect for fishing the near bank and finding pockets of fish. A light ledger or method feeder with a small, attractive hook bait (worms, maggots, sweetcorn or even bread) can be highly effective, with a bunch of worms ideal for picking out the larger bream. A simple whip, or 3m pole, with a float set up, a size 18 hook, and a pinch of break or a couple of maggots can keep kids entertained for hours.

Information about fishing the broads

Anglers staying at The Granaries are uniquely placed to access some of the finest coarse fishing the Norfolk Broads has to offer. From your cottage you have direct access to the River Ant cut, then the vast network of the Broads and the adjacent North Walsham & Dilham Canal opens up a world of exploration.

However, anglers must be aware that fishing rights on the Broads are fragmented. You will require a valid Environment Agency Rod Licence (free for juniors aged 13-16) and must adhere to the Coarse Fishing Close Season (15th March to 15th June inclusive).

Day Ticket Fishing Opportunities

When you venture out from the property, there are several options for day ticket or accessible fishing on the River Ant and surrounding waterways, but we would recommend you speak to JDT fishing tackle, based in Stalham, who can advise on the best places to fish. Although they don’t have a website, their address is 116 the high street, Stalham, NR12 9AZ and their phone number 07930 260004 – they are very helpful. They sell bait and tackle and can you advise you on the best places to fish in the area.

Free Fishing Stretches (River Ant)

The Broads Authority (BA) and local councils manage several publicly accessible fishing spots. Notably, on the River Ant, there is a well-known stretch of free fishing for approximately 2.25 miles on the left bank, both upstream and downstream of Ludham Bridge. This area is just a short boat journey away and is renowned for its Bream, Roach, and Pike. Additional free fishing spots are often available at Broads Authority 24-hour moorings, unless otherwise signed. For more information visit the B

North Walsham & Dilham Canal

This beautiful, tranquil waterway is perfect for pleasure anglers seeking less-pressured fishing. The Canal is mostly privately owned and managed by local bodies like the North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust and various Angling Clubs (such as North Walsham Kingfishers A.C.). Day Tickets are required for many stretches. Before fishing it’s best if you speak to the folks at JDT fishing tackle, based in Stalham, who are very helpful on 07930 260004.

Local Angling Club Waters

For dedicated coarse or specimen anglers, local clubs often control the best stretches. Stalham Angling Club and the Norwich & District Angler’s Association (NDAA) manage various waters and broads nearby. It is always best practice to check the club’s website or contact them directly to find out where day tickets are valid and what the specific rules are before you go.

Unlocking the Broads by Boat

A major advantage of staying at The Granaries is the availability of your own private mooring. For the ultimate angling flexibility, you can arrange weekly rowing boat hire for just £60 from the adjacent boatyard.
