The eco friendly self-catering luxury Cuckoo Barn Lodge nestles in a peaceful valley just two miles from the renowned Rutland Water trout fishery making it an ideal base for those looking to set out on the reservoir for a fishing holiday or break. The Lodge is rated 4 Star Gold by Enjoy England and is pet and child friendly.
Beautiful accommodation and location
Looking out over meadows, the upside down lodge has bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs and living accommodation upstairs and can accommodate up to six people. The three bedrooms can be prepared as continental doubles or twins to suit individual parties. The master bedroom has a walk in wet room and bedrooms two and three share a family bathroom. Three foldaway beds are available for additional guests.
The spacious living area with three sofas, wood burner and a large oak dining table looks out over a private south facing terrace and lawn with views over old meadows whilst the fully equipped kitchen comes complete with oven, hob, dishwasher, washing machine, under counter fridge, under counter freezer and a microwave. The Lodge comes with Wi-Fi for internet connection.
Outside there is ample parking for three cars, a spacious patio area with table and chairs, benches on the lawn and even a hammock and croquet set for those lazy sunny days. Guests can also enjoy the use of the attractive breeze hut in the landscaped garden for an additional charge. Bed linen and towels are provided as is a Welcome Basket containing a range of essentials including tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits.
Cuckoo Barn is an ideal base to explore the market towns of Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford and enjoy a variety of other leisure pursuits. Rutland Aqua Park is open from late May to September including seven days a week during July and August.
There are many great places to eat in the area ranging from really good pubs through great eating houses to Michelin Star restaurants. Local favourites are The Wheatsheaf and the Plough at Greetham and Sarpech and Grainstore, Hornblower and Otters in Oakham. There are further excellent choices in Stamford. If you want to push the boat out, try Hambleton Hall, the Olive Branch, Hitchens Barn and the George Hotel of Stamford which all offer fine dining.
There are also facilities nearby for guests to play tennis, enjoy walking and cycling, visit local gardens which are open to the public and play golf on several courses. There are also numerous lovely walks through the stunning countryside, right from the doorstep at Cuckoo Barn.
Fishing on Rutland Water
Run by Anglian Water, Rutland Water has long been a premier destination for trout fly fishing and is well know for producing fantastic brown trout.
Rutland is predominately a fly fishing Venue, trout can only be targeted with a fly, however it is open for predator fishing with lures for pike, perch and the plentiful zander over the autumn and winter months.
Available on day or season ticket, the fishing on Rutland Water is suitable for all levels of experience with the trout fishing season running from March 8, 2024 until January 31, 2025.
Fly fishing can take place from both bank and boat and a variety of day ticket options are available including kill tickets and catch and release for all ages and abilities. Fishing permits are available from the tackle shop as well as vendor huts at Normanton and Whitwell car parks.
Accompanied children can fish for free within the rules and limits of the permit. although age restrictions apply to boat fishing.
