Key Facts about Badwell Ash
An idyllic Suffolk escape for the discerning angler
Badwell Ash Holiday Lodges is a premier destination for those seeking a tranquil, high-quality fishing experience combined with luxury accommodation. The five-acre site is intentionally designed with four lodges and one shepherds hut, ensuring that the venue never feels crowded and providing guests with a wide choice of fishing areas.
This is not a high-density “runs water”; instead, the lakes are managed naturally to encourage wildlife and produce pristine, hard-fighting fish that require a degree of angling skill to land.
The venue’s 50-year history as a fishery has allowed the stock to become fully established, with many fish being the natural progeny of the original 1970s stockings. Anglers appreciate the “wild” feel of the site, where the emphasis is on the quality of the catch and the beauty of the surroundings rather than sheer volume.
It is the perfect location for couples, as the luxurious Scandinavian log cabins each come with two private pegs offering 24-hour fishing, plus a private hot tub for relaxing after a hard day’s fishing.
Situated in the heart of Mid-Suffolk, the lodges are conveniently located near the historic market town of Bury St. Edmunds. For those looking to explore further, the Suffolk coast is within an hour’s drive, as are the cities of Cambridge and Norwich. The local village of Badwell Ash, just half a mile away, provides essential amenities including a well-stocked shop, a traditional pub, The White Horse Inn, and a local chippy.
Main Lake
The Main Lake is the centerpiece of the fishery, covering approximately two-thirds of an acre with depths reaching up to 12 feet. It is an established gravel pit with a bowl-shaped profile and a hard, gravelly bottom, largely free from heavy silt. The margins are well-defined by reeds and natural vegetation, providing excellent cover for patrolling fish.
Species and specimen sizes
This is a diverse mixed fishery where the carp are the primary draw, having grown to weights well into the mid-20s, with a specimen recorded at 26lb. The lake also holds a significant head of quality tench and bream, both reaching good weights of 5lb, alongside large roach and rudd that frequently tip the scales between 1lb and 2lb.
Tactics and technical advice
For those targeting the larger carp, traditional rigs with boilies and pop-ups are highly effective. Given the hard gravel bottom, presentation is often straightforward, though the “wild” nature of these fish means they can be wary of heavy pressure and over feeding; a stealthy approach to the margins often yields the best results.
Anglers seeking a variety of species often find success with traditional float fishing. A simple waggler approach with maggots, corn, or soft pellets can result in a frantic session with roach, rudd, and the occasional hard-fighting tench. It is common for guests to fish one rod on a “set and forget” carp rig while actively float fishing with a second rod to keep the action going.
Kingfisher Lake
Kingfisher Lake offers a different challenge, serving as a dedicated silverfish and pleasure fishing water. Also spanning about two-thirds of an acre, it is notably shallower than the Main Lake, with depths typically ranging between 6 and 8 feet. This lake is ideal for anglers who prefer high-frequency bites and traditional pleasure fishing methods.
Species and stocking
The lake holds a variety of silverfish, including a good head of bream, roach, rudd, and perch as well as carp. It is also a favourite for fans of the crucian carp, which are a popular target here. The Crucians are easily spooked, but very catchable with light tackle, especially around the reed beds and under the overhanging willow trees. Many visitors to Kingfisher Lake have spent hours catching these golden beauties!
While the carp in Kingfisher are generally smaller than those in the Main Lake, they still reach up to 8lbs and provide excellent sport on lighter tackle.
Successful techniques
The pole is a devastatingly effective tool on Kingfisher Lake, allowing for precise bait placement over the shallower shelves. Feeding small amounts of micro-pellets or groundbait regularly will keep the silverfish shoals active throughout the day. For the crucian carp, a delicate float setup with a single grain of corn or a small pellet fished just off the bottom is a good approach.
Because this lake is designed for pleasure fishing, it is the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon session. The perch can be targeted around the natural features with worms or small spinners, providing a fun alternative to the stationary bait approach. The shallower water warms up quickly in the spring, making this lake particularly productive during the early season.
The Lodges
Scandinavian log cabins (4 available)
The site features four luxurious Scandinavian log cabins designed to provide a “home from home” experience. Each cabin sleeps up to 4 people and has two double bedrooms. The cabins are spacious and open-plan, featuring a fully equipped kitchen with all modern appliances, and everything you need for your stay, including cutlery and crockery – guests need only bring their food and fishing gear.
The standout feature of these cabins is the private wooden decking that extends directly over the water. Each deck is equipped with a private hot tub, a barbecue, and outdoor seating, making it an ideal spot for social evenings after a day on the lake. These cabins are perfect for couples or small groups of friends (adults only) who prioritise comfort and proximity to the water.

The shepherd’s hut (1 available)
For a more intimate or “boutique” stay, the Shepherd’s Hut offers a cozy alternative specifically designed for couples. While smaller than the log cabins, it maintains the high standard of luxury found elsewhere on the site and features a double bed, an internal bathroom with a shower and loo, and its own private sauna. Like the cabins, it provides a quiet, peaceful base from which to enjoy the surrounding nature and exclusive fishing access.
