Cromwell Lake is a premier specimen carp venue located just off the A1 in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Originally established as a fishery in 2004, this 18-acre spring-fed gravel pit has been meticulously developed into one of the Midlands’ most sought-after big fish waters. The site is steeped in a natural, peaceful atmosphere, surrounded by mature willow, beech, and cherry trees that provide a haven for local wildlife.

Over the years, the management has implemented an aggressive restocking programme, ensuring a healthy and sustainable population of high-quality carp. Today, the fishery is transitioning toward complete self-sustainability with its own onsite carp farm. The commitment to fish welfare and a high-standard angling experience is evident in every detail, from the immaculately kept grounds to the secure, CCTV-monitored parking, making it a safe and professional environment for serious specimen hunters looking for their next personal best in a beautiful setting.

The lakes, features & pegs

The main lake at Cromwell is an 18-acre expanse of crystal-clear water, with a topography that is as challenging as it is rewarding. Depths vary significantly, ranging from 3ft in the margins to deep holes of 18ft, providing a variety of environments for the fish throughout the seasons. The lake bed is a complex tapestry of prominent gravel bars, silty patches, and dramatic drop-offs, giving anglers plenty of features to target.

During the warmer months, various types of weed flourish, providing a rich natural food source that contributes to the impressive growth rates of the resident stock. There are 18 well-spaced swims, each designed to offer roughly an acre of water per angler, ensuring total privacy and reducing pressure on the fish. Swims are built with high-quality, level platforms that accommodate large bivvies with ease. Many pegs feature nearby reed beds and overhanging trees, which are prime spots for those who enjoy stalking or margin fishing, while the central bars attract those who prefer a long-range approach.

What you can catch

Cromwell Lake is renowned for its incredible stock of specimen carp. The lake currently holds over 250 carp, with an impressive “A-team” including at least 10 different fish over the 40lb mark and more than 70 fish exceeding 30lb. The current lake record stands at a massive 49lb 10oz, with several other fish pushing close to the 50lb barrier. While the majority of the stock consists of mirror and common carp, the average weight is a staggering 30lb+, making every run a potential trophy fish.

Proven tactics & recommended baits

Recent reports from Cromwell Lake suggest that high-attract tactics are currently the most effective way to tempt the larger residents. Solid PVA bags filled with crushed boilies and small pellets remain a firm favourite, especially when cast onto the clear silty patches found between the weed beds. Bright, fluorocarbon hookbaits have a long-standing reputation for success here, with pineapple and N-butyric acid-flavoured pop-ups being a top choice for many successful sessions.

For those fishing over larger beds of bait, a mixture of high-quality boilies, hemp, and maize has proven to be a winner, as it keeps the fish grubbing around on the gravel bars for longer periods. During the winter months, maggots are permitted and can be a game-changer when used in conjunction with small mesh bags or as part of a spod mix. Some of the most recent captures have fallen to “Wafter” style hookbaits balanced to sit just above the lake bed, providing a natural presentation that outwits the more wary, older fish. Many anglers find that baiting a spot and leaving it to settle for several hours before casting in is the best way to avoid spooking the nomadic groups of thirties that patrol the margins.

Top tips for success

Success at Cromwell Lake often comes down to watercraft and precision. On arrival, take the time to walk the entire lake; the fish are highly mobile and often give their position away with subtle rolls or bubbles over the silt. Because the lake bed varies so much, using a marker rod to find the transition point between gravel and silt is essential—these “edges” are prime feeding zones. Don’t be afraid to use zigs or floater tactics during the sunnier days, as the fish often spend time in the upper layers of the deep water.

If the action is slow, stay active and try a single high-viz pop-up cast toward showing fish rather than sticking to a heavy baiting plan. Always ensure your rigs are “drop-off” style to comply with fishery rules and protect the fish in weedy areas.
