Low lying Cambridgeshire has plenty of water

Like East Anglia, large parts of Cambridgeshire are renowned for being extremely low-lying with Holme Fen being notable for being the UK’s lowest point at just under three metres or nine feet below sea level. Indeed, the highest point of the county is only 146 metres or less than 500 feet above sea level, so it is hardly surprising there is plenty of water to fish in the county.

Rivers include the Cam, Nene and Great Ouse

Rivers such as the Cam, the Nene and the River Great Ouse are nationally renowned for their huge catches of silver fish, pike and zander with the Nene, in addition to being a prolific coarse water, being especially known by predator anglers as one of the best pike and zander waters in the country. The River Cam, a tributary of the River Great Ouse offers excellent mixed coarse fishing for roach, bream, chub and perch.

Fishing the Fens

Then there’s the Fens, an area covering some 500 square miles much of which was drained centuries ago in conjunction with Dutch land drainage engineers to provide flat and dry land for farming. Today the area provides highly fertile agricultural land where a system of drainage channels and man-made dykes and drains control water levels with a series of sluices and pumping stations. Needless to say there are plenty of fish in these channels, some of which are wide and slow moving.

Add to this the numerous lakes and day ticket commercial coarse fisheries that provide day and night pleasure and specimen fishing for anglers and you can hardly move a rod’s length without finding somewhere new to cast a line!

And that’s before you consider the angling clubs like the Cambridge Fish Preservation and Angling Society which provides fishing on over 30 miles of river bank, five lakes, four pits and one pond, the Brampton Angling Society, Waterbeach Angling Club, the Offord and Buckden Angling Society and even the Cambridge University Angling Club where you don’t have to be associated with the university to join. And that’s just to name but a few.
