Those who enjoy fishing for tench will love this 55 minute video which culminates in Matt Hayes exclaiming: "It's massive, it's absolutely massive..." as he draws to the net a fish he has been trying to lure for a couple of days and which sets a new personal best of 9lbs 5oz. Who said modern videos don't have happy endings?
'The Tench' explores tench fishing on traditional estate waters which are shrouded by reeds and lily pads to what Matt Hayes describes as "the fisheries of the future - gravel pits". It covers a variety of methods and techniques from traditional float fishing to modern tench fishing techniques involving carp-style tactics.
On 'estate waters', he shows how to use waggler, size 10s hooks, 5lb line and uncomplicated shotting patterns to great effect when combined with a variety of baits including bread flake, crust, lobworm and sweetcorn. For gravel pit fishing he shows how to select and shot floats which beat the wind and guides the viewer through how to make his favoured groundbait mix for fishing the feeder. (Don't mix all your groundbait in one go, and remember, if you add casters to groundbait they quickly become floaters as the groundbait mix draws the liquid out of the caster).
He also shows how you can tell the difference between a male and female tench, something which seems to have little relevance until he says that if you catch a 6lb male tench in a water you can bet there will be double figure females there as well.
Yet again the charming - and often amusing - Mr Hayes has presented a very watchable video, even if it isn't as full of technical detail and fish catching advice as his similar videos on 'Advanced Barbel Fishing' and 'Tactical Carp Fishing'.
