Tom Pickering takes a positive approach to match fishing and sets out to win. Second or third just isn't good enough.

'Match Fishing - the Individual Approach' sees him on the New Junction Canal near Doncaster where he uses waggler, feeder and pole to fish this big water. As an individual angler, he says he's after small chub and skimmers on big maggot or casters and hemp to bag a decent weight.

In this video and 'Match Winning - The Team Approach', Mark spends a lot of time explaining his setups, rigs and baits - although in many parts the two videos are very similar. However, it provides a very useful insight in how to get going and may make many second-line matchmen try a few new techniques when canal fishing.

At the outset Tom explains the ingredients for his groundbaits and shows how to mix them correctly. Then he talks the viewer through the terminal tackle he uses for chub and bream, how to set up the pole, and how to lubricate elastics and plumb depths before running through the different baits he uses and why.

In both videos he stresses the importance of building up more than one swim at a time and of not being afraid to ring the changes to find and catch the fish. Throughout he shows how to maximise fishing time and make the most of every minute of a match, when to change styles and how to keep the swims in front of productive throughout the competition.
