Many anglers presume that big barbel come only from big rivers. In this two-video set, Matt Hayes lays this myth to rest as he catches equally fine fish from the narrow and weedy River Ouse in Buckinghamshire as he does from the expansive and open River Severn at Hampton Lode. However, he warns it is no longer appropriate to turn up to a river, chuck in a piece of luncheon meat and expect to catch barbel. Tactics he used 10 years ago for barbel fishing on stretches where angling is popular no longer cut the mustard, he says.

The other thing about this video set is that, although it is called Advanced Barbel Fishing, it is equally suitable for newcomers and anyone looking to take up this branch of angling as all the techniques and baits used are clearly explained and illustrated.

In Volume One, Matt Hayes explains the importance of 'Bait and Wait' - pre-baiting a selection of four or five swims for a couple of hours before starting to fish. As he says: "the more preparation you give it - the better the fishing will be". He then goes on to look at midi-boilies and particle baits, how to return caught fish to the water correctly and how to fish difficult swims.

In addition to explaining the popular rigs he uses for barbel, Matt Hayes briefly discussed hooks and how to make partially buoyant boilies before moving on to cover winter barbel fishing on the River Severn when he explains how he touch legers, uses feeders and covers the important points of upstream feeder fishing.

Volume Two starts with the engimatic Mr Hayes explaining the range of specialist equipment he uses for barbel fishing before taking the viewer on a walk down the Severn where he shows us how to spot likely barbel swims.

From here he discusses the advantages of the four main baits he uses - maggots, hempseed, luncheon meat and pastes. For those who like fishing traditional luncheon meat he explains how to make a 'stringer' - much like a kebab on pva string - and outlines the relative importance of colour and smell. On this point he shows how the use of meatamino bait dips can give your hook bait a boost.

The tape closes with an explanation of the various types of leads he uses and a brief trip back to the River Ouse for a touch of summer barbel fishing.

It has to be said that even anglers who have never fished a river or caught a barbel in their lives will come away from this set feeling they are now experts with several good catches under their belts.
