Like him or loathe him, George Melly has been around for a long time and still remains active on the stage and on the bankside. In his later years, however, George Melly has become a great promoter of his love of angling, and in 'Hooked' he indulges himself in an evocative account of his lifelong passion for fly-fishing and his adventures and misadventures along the way.
It was in August 1945, just two days before his ninth birthday, that the young George Melly caught his first trout, and he has been hooked on the sport ever since. World-renowned as a professional blues singer, George Melly has been an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy, an art gallery assistant, part-time cartoonist, scriptwriter and music, television and film critic.
But, whatever he has been doing and wherever he has been performing, he has always been able to make time to escape to the silence and magic of a nearby riverbank to indulge his favourite passion.
On his latest book he says: "If I write for anyone, it is for those for whom the supreme thrill, especially after hours of inactivity, is when the rod bends, the line screams off the reel, the hook holds and after a tention-filled fight, the fish surfaces, turns over on his side and the net slides under him."
