Jack's Pool
At just over three acres in size and with 40 pegs, Jack's Pool is an easy water to fish with a wide selection of species including common and mirror carp to 25lbs, plenty of fish in the low teens and massive numbers between 4lbs and 8lbs. There are also good numbers of ghosties to about 4lbs and grass carp to 6lbs with the odd specimen running again top low double figures. In addition, there are plenty of F1 hybrid carp to 2lbs and a good head of decent sized crucian carp.
In addition there are good numbers of tench to 6lbs, bream to 5lbs, chub to 3lbs, roach and rudd to 1lb 8ozs and a good head of perch to 3lbs which can provide excellent winter sport.
A prolific water where all methods of angling are effective, Jack's Pool is about five feet deep on average with two feet of water being found round the edges before the banks slope off to the bottom. It is popular with pole, waggler and carp anglers with both modern and traditional carping techniques working well.
Most popular baits with the carp anglers tend to be bread flake, 6mm to 8mm halibut pellets and boilies up to 15mm with bright sweet flavours such as tutti fruitti, pineapple and strawberry flavours tending to be the most successful. Surface fishing in summer is described as being "out of this world" with floating bread or dog biscuits being the most obvious choice cast to where the fish can be seen surfacing in warmer weather and during hot summer evenings.
Pole and waggler anglers fish light for the silver fish and scale up line strength and hook sizes to 6lbs to 8lbs line and Size 10 or 12 hooks when going for the carp.
Because there is such a wide species of fish in the lake most baits work well with anglers regularly using prawns, mussels, casters, maggots, sweetcorn, soft hooker pellets, worms and bread punch or flake. However, by and large the choice is virtually limitless with luncheon meat, Pepperami, cheese and pastes also being used by many anglers.
Those wanting to fish further out tend to opt either for the Method feeder or cage feeder, packing the method with a medium, sized ball of method mix or filling a feeder with maggots and packing the end with groundbait.
Whilst all parts of the pool are equally productive, the pegs down the right hand bank looking down the lake are all popular with most anglers fishing either in the margins or out towards the island. Unusually, fishing tight against the island does not seem to produce results with the best option being to fish about 15 feet short of the island.
The pegs down the peninsula are also good as they provide plenty of bankside cover for anglers who can cast a short distance to the long thin island which runs parallel to it. They are also more secluded than some of the other pegs on the lake.
Fishing on the bottom tends to be the best way to start a session, feeding the swim with a medium sized amount of hook samples or maggots mixed with either feeder pellets or groundbait and then feeding a little at intervals throughout the session, particularly after catching a fish.
Because Jack's is such a productive water it is ideal for those who have recently taken up angling or for adult anglers who are teaching youngsters to fish and want a water where they stand a good chance of catching lots of fish fairly easily.
Ricky's Match Pool
Built in 2004 to cater for increasing demand for match angling, Ricky's Pool is shaped like a moat with a causeway leading to the large central island where anglers can park their cars. Fishing is from the pegs on the island to the outer banks.
Being crammed with a mix of fish, it is popular with both match and pleasure anglers.
Stocked with a good head of commons, mirrors and F1 carp to about 4lbs with the occasional fish going to 9lbs,Ricky's is also home to bream to about 4lbs as well as crucians, tench, roach and rudd to about 1lb and chub to 12ozs.
Although the match record for Ricky's currently stands at 107lbs for a five hour match, most anglers generally need 60lbs to 70lbs to win with catches in excess of 50lbs being common place. In the past 12 months several matches have been won with weights which scaped over the 100lb mark.
Ricky's has banks which slope down to a four feet deep central channel and holds 27 well-spaced pegs, making it an ideal venue for small club matches whose anglers want to be away from pleasure anglers on Jack's Pool.
It is obvious just from looking at the water that Ricky's is predominantly a pole water, although some anglers fish the waggler and even a lead or feeder to the reeds on the far bank. Whichever method anglers choose, the most popular baits tend to be bread punch, casters, maggots, soft hooker pellets, luncheon meat and sweetcorn.
The venue for Parkers' regular Saturday Open matches, Ricky's Pool can be booked for small club matches at £5.00 per peg by telephoning 02476 310695.
