The name Mallory Park is synomymous with the roar of engines, the smell of oil and the searing whine of high-speed car and bike racing. Surely few places could be further removed from the tranquility and pleasant surroundings required by angling?

The lake is in the centre of the circuitNot so. Whilst Mallory Park Fisheries controls the angling on the Big Lake in the centre of the Mallory Park circuit, it also has a large lake and two attractive sheltered pools away from the track where the the hum of insects and the chirpy songs of birds is about as loud as it gets for most of the time.

Add to this the fast expanding Glebe complex just a couple of miles down the road, where wildlife and conservation go hand in hand with angling, and you have a club with an open membership which combines the best of all worlds, plus the promise of more - much more - to come.

Plenty of fish to go forOwner Roy Marlow, a well-known match angler in the 70s and early 80s, used to fish for England and was 'the other half' to Ivan Marks in Leicester tackle dealers Marks and Marlow. He's a cheerful, tall but quiet man with a big smile, a fantastic knowledge of angling and an unquenchable love of conservation.

With Mallory Park Fisheries he has combined the two to provide a club for anglers where members have a say and take a sense of ownership and pride in their waters. Each member is provided with a car sticker, membership 'passport' and a key which gives access to all the waters and their car parks. Because of this all the waters are open 24-hours a day.

Meet Roy and ask him to sum up his fishery and he will tell you its a club made up of happy anglers - and happy fish!

A quiet spotIt may sound ludicrous, but as you get to know Roy a bit more and spend time with him on the Mallory and Glebe lakes you start to understand what he means. There are so many pools and lakes to have a go at, and so much water, that for much of the time you are unlikely to see another angler, particularly if you fish mid-week. This means the fish are stress-free as they are never under pressure.

The atmosphere in the club is such that, in the 10-month closed season - which runs from March 31 until May 31 at the request of the members themselves - anglers still turn up at the waterside just to be there and enjoy the surroundings. They contemplate the coming season, revisit moments from the last one and even bring plants and bushes for Roy to plant on his sprawling acres.

This was how The Glebe started life!During the season there are social and angling events for members and clubs whilst throughout the year Roy Marlow publishes regular newsletters which keep members up-to-date with everything that is going on at both Mallory Park and The Glebe.

In addition, the fishery organises a wide range of corporate events for companies, clubs or groups who want a day out with a difference.

There's a serenity about the fisheries, and as Roy throws in the occasional handful of floating coarse fish pellets and follows them with handfuls of bread, the carp willing move in to investigate before idly slooping them down. They turn for another piece, and just before they sink below the surface you could be forgiven for thinking that one just smiled at you...
