Wall to wall chub, carp and bream abound and there are some impressive barbel around. Pole, waggler and feeder all score but make sure that if you fish the pole both pole and elastic are up to the job. At least 12 elastic is recommended. The barbel adore luncheon meat and often paste baits are unbeatable for all species. Waggler fished shallow with sprayed maggots regularly produces some colossal chub bags with individual fish up to 5lbs.
If fishing the waggler it often pays to fish shallow - no deeper than a couple of feet or so - and to loose feed every cast with maggots. In addition to decent bags of roach and rudd, this technique os also popular for catching good bags of chub with individual fish up to 5lbs being taken on this technique.
Paddock
As with Snake and Crater, Paddock is booked for competitions most weekends but offers excellent sport for the midweek angler. Paddock was designed primarily as a pole water and a 10 elastic is recommended. However, it is still effective on the waggler, particularly if fished close by the bank or as near to the islands as you can get with a float.
Loose feed maggots or casters to the islands and lower a variety of baits as close as possible to the reeds. Make sure the pole and elastic are right for the job, as the average size of fish can be pretty big.
Snake Pool
Holding a good mix of species including carp, roach, rudd and plenty of tench, golden orfe and bream to 4lbs, Snake Pool fishes very similar to Paddock Pool and although very popular with pole anglers it offers plenty scope on the waggler. Again, most anglers do well fishing close to the bank or hard against the islands in two or three feet of water with maggots and caster the predominant baits whilst Peg 15 is renowned as being a flyer!
In summer a deadly technique is again to fish two feet deep or less using maggots and caster whilst loose feeding every cast.
Crater
Everything which has been said for Paddock and Snake Pools applies equally to Crater.
Again, this has been designed primarily as a pole water with fishing close to the bank and against the islands popular ways of luring the fish. A shallow bait in summer is good, whilst pleasure anglers may want to try tempting the carp and orfe with floating baits such as bread or chum mixer.
Reptile and Little ReptileAlthough small, these are two very pretty pools which are noted for their hard-fighting Koi and Ghost Carp which run to 6lbs and their Golden Orfe which go to 4lbs. Both pools fish well, particularly in the warmer months when favoured baits are meat, pellets, sweetcorn and paste.
Both pools have fairly even bottoms at about five feet deep and are therefore ideal for either waggler or pole fishing when a 10 elastic is recommended. Because of the large numbers of carp, this is an ideal water for close-range surface fishing particularly as the rising Koi Carp give spectacular displays when taking floating bread or mixers.
