PHASE THREE

Derwent Pool on Phase Three at Makins FisheryAll six match lakes, which were purpose-built for competition and designed for pole fishing, are served by a central car park which has spaces for over 100 vehicles.

Although most of the pools are normally booked for competitions at weekends they are usually clear during the week for practice or use by pleasure anglers when some good nets can be had.

The majority of the swims can be fished with an 11-metre pole tight to the islands and often respond best to loose fed maggots and casters.

Inner and Outer Avon Pools on Phase Three at Makins FisheryAs with many of the other British Waterways Makin Fisheries, good results are regularly had by fishing less than two feet deep although in colder weather fishing on the bottom is usually better.

Solid with carp, barbel, orfe, roach and skimmers, it is often the case that anglers need to use small cubes of meat to sort out the better fish. However, there is no need for carp crunching poles on most of the lakes as the average size of the fish stocked is between 8oz and 1lb 8oz. As a result only a size 10 elastic is recommended. However, when fishing Derwent Pool it pays to scale up your tackle as the carp in here run to 15lbs.
